Before there was a document which supported the notion of the “sovereign rights and liberties” of the individual, over the “special rights” of monarchs, nobles and clergy… there was, in an earlier time, a simple common acknowledgement among ancient peoples that our origin and make-up was of a divine nature.
According to the study of word origins (etymology) – sovereign is of Old French and Latin roots meaning “above”. Therefore, as describing a person, a sovereign is one who is subject to no one – or (as found online in “Brain Quotes”) Independent of, and unlimited by, any other; possessing, or entitled to, original authority or jurisdiction; as, a sovereign state; a sovereign discretion.
History records that humankind’s failure to acknowledge its own individual value, authority, gifts and personal responsibility (called by indigenous peoples as original medicine) led to the giving away of personal authority to others to exercise rule. This gave way to the rise, and reign of monarchs, states, nations… and now multi-national corporations.
What we fail to realize is a very important fact. By divine origin, we are sovereign by birth. No one has the authority to make us subjects or slaves to another but ourselves. Freedom is a divine right that can neither be given or taken away by another, unless we permit it to be so.
In truth, states, nations, monarchs and elected leaders – only have the power that we allow them to have, and this of course includes multi-national corporations. We have really forgotten where true authority lies.
If we are to make a difference for the better, we need to first do a few basic things:
- Love ourselves and respect our authority
- Love our neighbors, and respect their authority
- Honor the environment in which we live
- Hold our representatives responsible for the common good of all
- Faithfully acknowledge and correct all ills
- Make a personal lifetime contribution to the common good of all
